From The Inbox

One of the benefits of blogging has been new friendships.

I've "met" some amazing women in the blogosphere that I hope to meet in real life someday.

They encourage me and challenge me.

They make me laugh and/or cry to tears.

For whatever reason, this blog doesn't get a ton of commenting.

Instead, I'm being blessed with emails.

Sometimes they're hilarious.

Other times, they are heartbreaking.

But always, they are honest and heartfelt.

Recently, I've received emails asking various "nuts and bolts" questions.
I hope to be able to share some of the more touching emails in this "series" called From The Inbox. But before I tackled that, I thought I would share the answers to the most common questions I've received of late.

~Who powers your blog?

I started out with Blogger with my very first blog, The El-ement. The old posts are sitting there but it isn't an active blog. At the time I started that blog I was only looking for a place to put my writing since my head was getting full (hee hee).

Then I started Mishmash Maggie (also on Blogger) and as I got more into it I thought maybe I should move over to Wordpress or Typepad.

I decided on Wordpress.

I've tried several times to get things going over there but their format and my brain do not get along-- at all.

I just decided to "spruce" up my Blogger blog as best I could and I have been very happy ever since.

The only extra thing I've done is purchase my domain so I could have my own "dot com" thing going on. But if you look on the bottom of my blog, you'll see the familiar "Powered by Blogger" logo.

~Who designs your blog?

I laughed the first time I was asked this because if you've been around here for awhile you know that my background and design change, um, er, ah, frequently to say the least.

I actually design the layouts and backgrounds myself. The design has changed dramatically over the past six months as I've learned various tricks of the trade such as how to edit the HTML (code/language that makes web pages functional) or CSS (code that makes web pages pretty).

I learned most of that information from Blogger Buster, The Cutest Blog on the Block and Graphically Designing --I go there for inspiration as well as some blogging tips.

I also checked out every "Dummies" book from the library related to computer geek stuff.
My personal preference were the separate books of HTML for Dummies and CSS for Dummies.
The 4-in-1 Desk Reference, which combined a bunch of books together, was so large and overwhelming, that one look at it sent me into a corner, whimpering and sucking my thumb.

I get the willies just thinking about it.

~What kinda of computer do you have/ what program(s) do you use to design your blog?

I'm a Mac girl. I always have been. I've used Apple computers since the days of the IIe. For you youngsters out there, yes there was actually a time when "Macintosh" was just a fruit.

I remember the day MTV started too but I digress...

Where were we? Oh yes, my machine!
My current computer is an iMac (geek stuff- 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo/ 4 GB RAM)

I didn't have any plans to buy a new computer any time soon but once I started blogging and designing again the life was taken right out of our G4 Powerbook.

Along with that, my memory-intensive, power hungry program is Photoshop. Way back in the day (i.e. as a student in the University of Minnesota's Art Department) I started with Photoshop 3.0. I've upgraded a few times over the years and I now use version CS3.

I have an old version of Illustrator but I never kept up with the upgrades. Photoshop and my brain get along so I adopt the motto, "If it isn't broken, don't fix it." I can make it do what I want without too much brain power on my part. As long my computer works, I'm good to go.

~How old are you? How long have you been married? What is your ethnicity?
How old are your kiddos?

I love, love, love the age question! I only love it because of some of the guesses. My most favorite guess was Mrs. Bridget G when she guessed 28! Twenty-eight!! Oh, I thought I was hot stuff that day!! LOL

This year I will be 42.

The Captain and I have been married for almost 14 years, together as a couple for 19 years and we've known each other for 33 years.

He still makes me laugh... every day.

Nana is full Filipino (with a healthy mixing in of Spanish and Chinese) and Papa is Scotch-Irish so that would make me???? Hard to match for make-up?? Confused for every known ethnic group?? You name it, I've been confused for it.

It doesn't bother me. The only time I am a little bothered with the ethnic question is in regards to the kids.

The Captain is full Filipino and with my half, we've got a little Punnett Square going on. People look at the various "shades" of our kids and think they all have different dads.

Not so fun.

And the last question for our game of "Getting to Know You" is about the kids.

Leisl-6th grade; Brigitta- 4th grade and Kurt- 2nd grade.

Well, that wasn't too painful was it? I love your emails (and comments too).
It's okay that you guys are shy... :)

If you have a question-- ask a way! I'll tell you if I can't answer it and hopefully point you to someone that can. Ask anyone that knows me and they'll tell you I'm an "open book."

I can't imagine anyone asking a question I wouldn't want to answer.

The only other thing is the question of my "denomination" and other faith questions. So I added a "Statement of Faith" link right under my profile. I simply stole the statement off our church website (thank you Pastor Jim!!!).

If that is unclear, again ask and I will try to clarify.

I know that you have referred to the Captain as your childhood sweetheart, but you've known each other since you were 10???? wow. That is very cool.
We lived in the Twin Cities from 1999 to 2006, so I'm guessing that you were not still there, but it's cool to think we've "almost" crossed paths before. I enjoy that "small world" stuff.
Oh, and you are fabulous enough that I guess I won't hold the Mac thing against you...but my husband might. :>)

Hello Miss Lainie! I haven't seen you in so long but the Internet is a small, small world and I somehow stumbled upon your blog!! It sounds like you're all doing really great, which I am so glad to hear. Life is 100% chaos, and I wouldn't have it anyother way. I'm hoping to actually run into you in person eventually. I need to give you a hug!

You've always been a huge blessing to me. :)

Love and Blessings,

BEKAH!!!! Where you been?

Girl, are you actually local? I thought you were heading to WA??!

I'll be checking out your blog... I hope you've been behaving yourself ;P

I still have every card you've ever made me...

"I can't imagine anyone asking a question I wouldn't want to answer."

Thanks. Now I'm going to waste the day away, trying to come up with a question you wouldn't want to answer.

Does that make me contrary? ;~p

We've got a puker...again, so no Bible study for me...again. I'm thinking our attempt to do an every-other Thurs thing just isn't working. Hugs!
